is it jazz?

A San song in memory of Zim Ngqawana

then you hear the saxophone

screaming

a lot of notes going up, rolling down

on the beat of a drummer, dreamlike in

a trance:

it is jazz,

jeez, so touching

–

and then the double bass does a

solo

a lot of buzzing, pizzicato plucking

the thick strings in a duet with

a keyboard:

it is jazz,

so touching, jeez

–

scat, goes a high-ish voice

singing

a famous jazzy tune with extra notes

to color it with more than love and warmth

and talent:

jeez, so touching

this is jazz

Zim’s SAN Song album was recorded in 1996 and was a collaboration between South African jazz musicians and their Norwegian counterparts – Zim and Andile Yenana from SA, and Norwegians Bjorn Ole Solberg, Ingebrigt Haker Flaten and Paal Nilssen-Love.
